Documented violation
Abir Moussi
Abir Moussi, a lawyer and president of the Free Destourian Party, was arrested on 3 October 2023 after going to the Presidential Palace to submit a grievance concerning decisions on the local elections. Several judgments have been handed down against her in multiple cases, including a 12-year prison sentence in the “registry office” case on 12 December 2025.
After her arrest and transfer to the La Goulette police station and then to the Bouchoucha custody centre (where she was prevented from meeting her lawyers for 48 hours), a committal warrant was issued against her on 5 October 2023. The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention considered her detention unlawful. It also emerged that she had been held without a valid committal warrant from 26 May 2025, after the previous warrants had expired.
On 12 February 2025, Abir Moussi announced that she was going on a hunger and medication strike in protest against what she considered ill-treatment in prison. On 14 February 2025, she was transferred from Manouba prison to Belli prison without her family being informed, while being kept in a critical state of health: she remained in prison for four days despite her deteriorating health before being taken to hospital, and some of those close to her learned by chance that she had been sent to Taher Maamouri University Hospital in Nabeul.
