Documented violation

Yassine Bayoudh

Yassine Bayoudh, a Tunisian citizen and father of three from Monastir governorate, suffered from glandular disorders, rapid heartbeat and hand tremors. He was moved between Monastir Civil Prison and Haouareb Civil Prison (Kairouan), and died in suspicious circumstances surrounded by conflicting accounts.
On 17 July 2026, his mother visited him at Monastir Civil Prison; his health appeared stable despite his previous health problems, and he told her that he would be transferred to another prison. On 18 July 2026, security officers came to the family home asking about his brother, without informing her directly of her son’s death; she later learned the news from neighbours. The prison administration informed her that the body had been sent for autopsy at the University Hospital in Kairouan. When she enquired, she was told that he had died at Haouareb Civil Prison as a result of high temperatures, and that he had been transferred because conditions in that prison were “better”. She tried to retrieve his identity card and was sent back and forth between the two prisons without it being found. She received conflicting accounts of the time of death (shortly after her visit, during the transfer, or on arrival at Haouareb), leaving the actual date, place and cause of death unclear.
