Documented violation
Wassim Hafedh Jaziri
On 4 May 2025, Wassim Hafedh Jaziri was arrested by National Security forces following a complaint against him: the officers stormed his home without a judicial warrant and took him, handcuffed, to the Sakiet Ezzit police station, where he was questioned without a lawyer present and without being informed of his legal rights. On 5 May 2025, he was brought before the investigating judge in Sfax and taken to Hédi Chaker Hospital for follow-up of his mental health condition, then committed to Sfax Civil Prison on the same day without receiving the necessary treatment, despite suffering from severe psychological disorders and requiring five types of medication. The prison administration initially refused to accept his medication and required a medical prescription, and when he was later given it, he was allowed to take it only once a day instead of twice as usual. His health gradually deteriorated (skin disease, shortness of breath, psychological crisis, inability to eat), and although he informed the prison administration, he was told to wait before being taken to hospital. On 14 July 2025, he appeared before the investigating judge and the Prosecutor General for the closing of the investigation, suffering from exhaustion and severe shortness of breath, and requested medical follow-up. He was returned to prison and died that same evening at around 9 p.m. The family was informed of his death the following day, while the forensic medical report determining the cause of death is still pending.
