Nabil Maalaoui

Nabil Maalaoui was arrested in January 2025 without any judgment having been issued against him, and was committed to Belli Civil Prison in Nabeul. During his detention he developed cancer, without receiving serious medical care, as the prison administration merely gave him pills and an injection. His health gradually deteriorated amid an overcrowded cell and inadequate food; he was given only one nappy a day despite having lost control of his bodily functions, and the prison administration refused to accept nappies provided by his family. He was not taken to hospital until his condition had sharply deteriorated and he was having difficulty breathing: on the morning of 22 September 2025 he was transferred to the burns hospital in Ben Arous, where he died the same day, just three hours later. The family was not informed of his death until hours later, even though the prison administration had their telephone number, and the administration refused to allow them to meet the supervising doctor despite their repeated requests. Testimonies from his fellow detainees indicate that his death resulted from medical neglect and poor conditions of detention.
