Documented violation

Farouk Amroussia

Farouk Amroussia, a Tunisian citizen, was subjected to suspected torture and serious ill-treatment in connection with a quarrel in which he was not involved, during which he was moved between the Kalâa Seghira police station, the Sousse National Security District and then Messaadine prison.
On 17 August 2026, Farouk Amroussia was taken to the police station in Kalâa Seghira in connection with a quarrel between two passengers on a shared minibus, in which he was not involved.
He was transferred from the Kalâa Seghira station to the Sousse National Security District, where, according to his statement, he was subjected to violence mainly because of his past membership of a student organisation. He was subjected to physical and psychological torture: severe beating on his legs and mouth, bottles of urine poured over him inside a detention room full of broken glass, being sprayed with an incapacitating gas, and being beaten while other detainees were incited against him. He was denied his right to his medication despite suffering from a chronic illness, and his family was not informed of his situation until 48 hours later.
He was transferred from the Sousse National Security District to Messaadine prison. On 21 August 2026, he appeared before the court and was sentenced to a fine.
