Documented violation

Hazem Amara

On 12 June 2025, the young Hazem Amara was arrested

On 12 June 2025, Hazem Amara (24, from Grombalia, diabetic and having undergone five open-heart operations) was arrested following a quarrel with a customer at the café where he worked as a waiter, after the latter filed a complaint at the Grombalia police station. He was questioned the same day without a lawyer present and held at the Nabeul governorate station. On 13 June 2025, a committal warrant was issued against him and he was transferred to Belli prison, charged with attempted premeditated murder. On 19 June 2025, his mother submitted his medical file showing that he held a disability card and suffered from a chronic illness requiring medication to calm acute attacks, but the prison administration prevented her from bringing in this medication. During her last visit on 7 July 2025, he told her that there was no bed for him and that he had difficulty using the toilet despite his diabetes, and she noticed swelling under his eyes. His health gradually deteriorated until he was transferred to Mohamed Taher Maamouri Hospital in Nabeul on 8 July 2025. A day after his admission to hospital, a family member was contacted to be informed of a health crisis and asked for his mother to come. On arrival, she learned of his death from another patient, who told her that he had been vomiting for a long time without anyone attending to him. Hazem died with his legs shackled inside the hospital room. The family was officially informed of his death on the evening of 9 July 2025 (although he had died that morning) and received the body the following day.
