Documented violation
Anas Saadaoui
Anas Saadaoui, an 18-year-old Tunisian from Mnihla in Ariana governorate, held a vocational aptitude certificate and was enrolled to continue his studies in tourism and hospitality in Tabarka. He suffered from a heart condition and shortness of breath. He died on 24 August 2026 inside Mornaguia Civil Prison in suspicious circumstances.
On 24 July 2026, Anas was arrested in connection with a criminal case and placed in the Bouchoucha detention centre after the investigation was completed. His family submitted medical files and reports to the competent judicial services requesting that he remain at liberty in view of his health condition (heart disease and shortness of breath).
On 10 August 2026, he was committed to Mornaguia prison pending the scheduling of his trial hearing. During visits he complained of high temperatures and severe overcrowding, as he was sleeping on a bed in rotation with six other prisoners. During his stay he suffered three health episodes and was able to see a doctor on only one occasion. On the morning of Monday 24 August 2026, his family went to bring in his medicines and medical supplies, but the prison administration refused to allow this and asked them to wait for the designated visiting day. He died that same evening inside the prison. The Public Prosecution opened an investigation into the circumstances of the death, which had produced no tangible results as of the date of documentation.
