Documented violation

Akram Jemaaoui

Date of committal to prison: 1 June 2024

On 1 June 2024, Akram Jemaaoui was attending a football match at Radès stadium. Following violence that broke out outside the stadium, he was arrested and taken to the Sidi El Bechir police station without his family being informed, then transferred to the Bouchoucha detention centre. The Sidi El Bechir station initially denied any knowledge of him, prompting his family to search for him via Facebook, where they managed to locate him with the help of a former detainee held with him. Three days after his arrest, a committal warrant was issued and he was transferred to Mornaguia Civil Prison, where he was later convicted and sentenced to one year in prison. During his trial, he told the judge that he had been beaten and that his health had deteriorated; he also told his father during a visit that he had been beaten and ill-treated. Two weeks after his imprisonment, Akram died on 17 June 2024 in Mornaguia prison and was taken to Charles Nicolle Hospital; the family was informed of his death on the evening of the same day. Official sources stated that the death was caused by respiratory distress and cardiac arrest, but the forensic medical report established that the death resulted from a severe violent assault with a hard object, which caused the entire rib cage to fracture and internal bleeding. A judicial investigation was opened, but no action has been taken to date.
